Interesting to note in a recent TV interview the mother of knife victim, Shakilus Townsend wore a broach which depicted a portrait of her son, upon a background of the Jamaican flag.

Why do our Blacks still not class themselves British?

A world of difference to the American Blacks, especially those who spoke at Michael Jackson's memorial service, they are all American, 'Stars & Stripes' forever.

Why is this, after all it was the British who were first to ban slavery, and later welcomed them into their country as immigrants not as slaves?

I'm still not getting your point aog. What's the evidence that black people in this country don't see themselves as British ? Seems to me that they cling less to their ancestry than the so-called Irish Americans do ('so-called ' because they are, in general, a very long way in ancestry and origin from Ireland or the true Irish ). We have the Notting Hill Carnival, but Americans have St Patrick's Day Parades at many places and the New York one is vastly bigger than that in Dublin, together with extras like dying a river green.. Are you to cite those parades as proof that many Americans don't class themselves as American? Or is that some woman wore a badge the sum total of your evidence that 'our' (!) blacks don't class themselves as British ?

That's the central thing AOG - I can't see where you're getting your information that Black Brits see themselves as less British than African Americans.

One thing though...I doubt that there are many white Americans who don't see black Americans as anything other than American...but as I've seen on AB, and as we hear from the mouths of certain right wing parties, blacks aren't seen as British at all!

Most staff in our hospital & OAP homes are black - though the carribeans & africans dont get along? The caribbeans, having been here the longest, understand & joke along but the africans speak little english & dont understand our humour.

Methinks there is enuf resentment between africans & caribbeans?
