Does anyone know the Latin name for "maranguin" flies (or similar name) in Lubumbashi, DRC? They are ~3mm in diameter, black, live near water, bite like mad and draw blood. Tabard repels them but not Peaceful Sleep.

Well, "maranquin" , with a Q, is an old French word for mosquito.(My guess is it's derived from 'marais' a marsh.). Was hoping that the word was confined to only one kind of mosquito or fly. Are these flies mosquitoes in appearance?

Haven't been able to track anything under maranquin. It may be that a hunt under 'moustique', the current French for mosquito, will find the DRC one illustrated and described, if it can't be found under 'mosquito' .
