What's the purpose of those slits in the flaps of self-seal envelopes?

I've always assumed that they are there to stop tampering of opening a letter.  If someone tries to open an envelope then they would get to the slit bit and end up ripping the outer bit off, if you know what I mean?

Yes I thought so too, it stops people being able to steam open the envelope and then reseal it.

Octavius, sorry to disagree with you but the slits will not prevent you from steaming open the envelope.  The slits prevent it being torn open, if you wet heat the flap with steam you can open it as if it hadn't been glued.
