In the advertising business a "scamp" is a rough design idea for an advert.  Does anyone know the origin of this word?

It's a variant of 'skimp', meaning to do something rapidly, carelessly or basically, probably based on the Old Norse word 'skemma', meaning to shorten.

Yes, scamp means to perform hastily and carelessly (as I suppose a rough draft woud be).  As QM says it probably has it's roots from olde, but via a 1687 term 'scamper' which means to run hastily.
