Cast iron bird bath going rusty!

I had a cast iron bird bath for my birthday in December, and it has started to rust already. Does anyone know how I can stop this from happening, or is painting it the only option? If not, is there a varnish I could use instead of paint - I like the colour of it now (minus the rust of course!).

Thanks x

Wire brush out the rust and use marine varnish.
Correction, for marine read `Yacht` or why not aluminium paint all over? It dries quickly.

carlton23, don't know about using Yacht Varnish on cast Iron, might work but Sunbeam would have to give it a few coats with sand-papering-down inbetween each - could be expensive.

Why not just buy a small tin of Hammerite or A N Other paint specfic to protect Iron from rust? It would last 3 - 4 years!
