I'm not much of a gardener, but have always looked after the roses, leaving most of the rest to He Who Must Be Obeyed. This year I cut them back quite severely in March, so they are only just starting to bloom. I have five bushes, all HTs, of various ages: Alpine sunset, Dutch Gold, Superstar, Ruby Wedding and a pure white whose name I forget. The white and Alpine sunset are fine; Ruby Wedding is more or less OK, but Dutch Gold and Superstar are looking very poorly and the buds won't open. They had whitefly, but I've got rid of that; no black spot (yet) but badly deformed leaves. Any suggestions, please? I'm wondering whether to uproot the two that are not doing well, but as Superstar was my father's favourite I really want to retain it if possible.

Many thanks.

Possibly wind damage. Dont uproot now as the soil is too dry for roots to set elsewhere. When they do bloom they will be worth the hard prune.

Thank you, Tamborine. I'm just a bit disappointed as I always try to take Superstar to the churchyard to commemorate Father's Day. I guess I'll just have to be patient!
