I back-up using Norton 360 onto a DVD. This is done fairly regularly and therefore i go through a number of DVD's because the software tells me I need a blank DVD. I have attempted to "delete" older back-up DVD's but how do i do it. I've attempted to reformat but it will not allow me to do so because the data is "read only".

Thanks for some help.

Are you actually using re-writeable DVDs? DVD-R and DVD+R discs can only be recorded once. (If you don't 'finalise' a disk you can add extra files to any blank space, but you can't reformat the disk to get back to an empty disc).

If you want to be able to 'start afresh', with a blank disc, you need to use DVD-RW or DVD+RW discs (depending upon the type of discs recognised by your drive). However they usually cost more than DVD-R/DVD+R discs and, more importantly, they're not as reliable. Anyone seeking 'archive quality' recording (where they can be reasonably sure that there are no data errors on the disc) should always use DVD-R or DVD+R discs. (I find Tesco's own brand disks to be cheap but reliable).
