I was reading the story on the beeb news website about Heathrow getting another runway ...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4612393.stm

...and it started me wondering how many runways can you fit within the confies of an airport (I know, I guess it depends on the size of the airport ...)

Well I have found the busiest airport, the one with the largest terminal, the longest baggage carousel ... but not the one with the most runways!?

Please, someone help me sleep tonight ... ;o)

O'Hare Airport in chicago has 7 runways, but they all intersect with at least one other runway, making them unusably inefficient in bad weather.  To my knowledge the airport with the largest number of truly usable runways is Denver International, in Denver, Colorado... with 6.  The north-south runways are not only parallell but spaced sufficiently to have legal (and safe) simultaneous instrument approaches.  Same holds true for the east-west runways...

Currently Schiphol features 5 main runways + 1 for general aviation. The fifth (really sixth), which is used mainly  was completed in 2003. Plans have already been made for a seventh runway.
