Jno is right, the usage/pronunciation of a word albeit differently is seldom a sign of vandalism. It is in cases the best pronunciation that someone not used to the word can muster. Like for example the indian words in the English language. They are in my opinion words fondly remembered and used in memory of an era that has now bygone. There is no vandalism involved but just the best efforts of a foreign occupying race to get their tongues around a strange language. The fact that they did and brought these words into the mainstream of their language and is still in use after nearly 57 years is a testament to the users. I will now start a thread on Indian words in the english language.

Sulfur is the official spelling according to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

The official spelling of Al is Aluminium, as we Brits spell it, so when the yanks stop spelling it Aluminum, I'll start spelling S as Sulfur

Sequin - the discoverer of said element, Sir H. Davy, called it Alumium in 1812, which became Aluminum.

Now tell me why the Americans should use the harmonized version and not the name it was given by its founder?

yes, according to Bill Bryson - who knows Nearly Everything - Davy gave it one name, then changed his mind and gave it another, aluminum, which was accepted by the Americans. The British then objected because they thought it should follow the -ium pattern of elements like sodium and strontium, and changed it again. So if anyone should change their ways, it should probably be the British.
