Microsoft Search Companion

Not only have I lost the 'search companion' ,but also the complete option of searching. When I click on the search image ( magnifying glass) I get a box that contains headings , but the drop down options are useless. For example if I click on the button 'File' the dropdown option is 'close'!!!
What do I need to install or look for ??
ANY simple help please.
