ho hum hokum
The film Amityville Horror was based on a true story of a man called Ronald de Feo who killed his entire family in this New York suburb.

It wasn't much of a stretch for film makers to suggest that he must have been "possessed by the devil"

Truth was simpler, he was a nutcase.

Poltergeist claims are hokum
Agree with Woofgang and Kev - hokum.

enfield poltergiest appears convincing enough- anyone unconvince me?

?

not the most convincing take on it . . .

a pro website says:
' Attempts by researchers to prove once and for all the existence of such phenomena failed time after time to actually collect good solid evidence of the events in Enfield. In one instance, a toy brick was said to have materialised out of thin air, flew across the room and hit a photographer on the head. Many items were found to catch fire on their own accord, while metal items seemed to bend and twist out of shape. Most disturbing of all, was the apparant possession of 12 year old Janet, from which came a deep gruff voice on many occassions.

Janet was also reported to have been constantly levitated out of bed at night by an unseen force, effectively trapping her on the ceiling in some cases. To this day the sheer length of time over which these phenomena occurred baffles researchers. This is considered to be a true "classic" poltergeist case.'

but of course it was never verified - so hardly convincing
I think that in time we'll find there are some very good explanations for a number of things we do not understand. Human nature is to write off the unknown to the supernatural. Early man had no concept of sound with regards to rapidly heated air, and so ascribed thunder to the Gods, for example.

It's possible that phenomenae some people claim to be ghosts or poltergeists are TRUE phenomenae, but it seems pretty unlikely that malevolent spirits of any brand are the cause. More than likely there are reasonable explanations for them, which we will divine at a later date.

Except of course for anything involving a spinning head. When this happens, it pretty much HAS to be Satan. : )
film was fantastic i thought ,but although the murders took place supposedly by the son being possessed i still feel hokum is where we should be at ,

I like that explanation El D:

"....generally considered as nothing but a menopausal bint's final cry for help and/or attention."

It's been reported that the family who bought the Amytiville house couldn't afford the mortgage payments and so concoted the story of the hauntings with the author of the book. It was all a big con. The film makers knew this but went along with the "True Story" hokum anyway because the murders part was true.
Question Author
enfield is certainly more convincing than amityville, but maybe im to suggestible becoz as soon as ive dismissed amityville the "well how do u explain that?" scenario pops up
Enfield - I read somewhere that the girls involved did admit to making some of it up because when the researchers came they felt they had to produce the goods.
