I have a 1993 Mk 3 Golf 1.8L, with 4 stud fitted wheels, i recentley just purchased a set of 4 Alloys for for it that were from a 1992 Golf mk3 GTi V6, i thought the wheels would fit, but when i checked the wheel GTi alloy wheels they were 5 stud fitting??? Is there anyway i can fit these wheels?? and why are the GTi mk3's different stud fitting to Golf mk3 L's???

Why are they different?  It could be a couple of reasons.  Firstly the V6 would have far more torque than the 4 cyclinder 1.8 litre engine.  Therefore a 5 stud fitment would help the road wheel to remain on the wheel hub (and not shear off through torque).

The other reason is that the V6 may borrow brakes/wheel hub/wheel size from an older VW or Audi etc., which uses the 5 stud fitment.  Again, the reason for this is above.

That's my guess anyway.

As for fitting them, well, you'd need a different wheel hub.  I can't remember what they're like on VWs, it maybe a case of changing the hub or whether it's built into the brake disc as well (disc bolted onto the hub rather than a detachable seperate hub).

I expect that the standard fit wheels for a 1.8l golf, a non performance model, will be smaller than the alloys you have bought. I assume you mean a golf VR6 as I dont think there ever has been a GTI V6 model golf. Larger, sporty alloy wheels always tend to have five stud fixings, rather than four, which is standard on more cooking versions of cars, its just the way it is! It gives a more secure fixing for the larger wheel. I cant see any practical way that you can fit these wheels, short of swapping the hubs for ones from a VR6 also, which would be totally impractical. Just sell the alloys on ebay, and learn from the mistake!
