I haven't travelled on a bus since 1972 - but perhaps they should install 'Smell Alarms' - (like smoke alarms).

I can never understand why people can't smell their own body odour either & as for passing wind.....now that would set an alarm off & hopefully embarrass the culprits!

If people on rations during the war could keep themselves clean, then why can't people living in 2005 do the same?

I suppose if you live with a certain smell day in and day out, you get used to it and don't notice. No excuse for inflicting it on others though.
I had this experience once.  I was on a train and this smelly man sat right up close to me.... I couldn't breath and it was physically making me feel sick, I had to get off at the next stop and move down the carriage.
I cant answer your question but i can say that your underlying humour about it all has made me laugh no end :-)
I find that some scents and aftershaves also invasive.

Funny you should ask oxeyedaisy because recently, everywhere I went in my local shops, there were whiffy people.  I was beginning to think that everyone in the area had their water cut off except for me.  Then I became paranoid & started wondering whether it was me, until I remembered the long list of cleansing lotions, potions & squirts I'd used that morning!!  Think that might be a cue for another thread!

smudge your Smell Alarms has had me giggling, my sister is going to love that when I tell her!!

Poor oxe-- reminds me of my poor student days when hubby and I got the bus from Barcelona to Dover and two smelly hippies sat in the seats in front of us - phew did they pong AND THEN they had the nerve to lower their seat backs and their greasy revolting heads were almost in our laps.  We were in the back row and couldn't move. I did have to ask them politely to sit up. AND TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY - WE WERE SEARCHED AT DOVER AND THEY WEREN'T.

You just get used to smells. I mean whenever I go into a house where cats live I think, "How can they not smell that?" but I suppose the brain somehow accepts the smell and tunes it out.

brionon - I agree! especially when it's first thing in the morning!

i have got a weak stomache for odours they nauseate me..and i have a big hairy golden retriever that lives in the house with us and every week i clean the carpets and he gets bathed also his bed covers are changed every other day..no one can smell him..the post about the greasy hair hippys was funny..i dont suppose it was funny at the time...animals wash themselves so why cant the smelly humans..
I love to f @rt on the underground when the train is packed, and then watch everybody looking at each other for guilty signs.
Yes Alan & I bet it's just after you've eaten boiled egg sandwiches too!
have to add to what brionon said. have been reduced to coughing fits in the shop where i work by a bloke who must use a whole bottle of the stuff a day. you can smell him coming. at a distance of maybe 8 yards its pleasant but any closer and its suffocating. and this bloke consciously makes the effort and spends money to do that!
To amplify my previous reply. Scents are, to me ,like loud music, even if I like the music or scent i don't want it forced on me. Another of my quirks is--I like the smell of women. {It turns me on}

I recently walked up to a Manager in Peacocks to ask him something, but he smelled so bad that I made the excuse that I'd found what I wanted & walked away.

It doesn't matter where you work, but considering he works in a clothes shop, you'd have thought he would smell pleasant - instead of BO & dried wee!

How the other ladies work with him - Heaven knows!

i worked in a new age shop once as a clairvoyant and one of the shop assistants was dreadfull she arrived smelling of bo and it got worse as the day went on..i wasnt employed as such as i worked for myself and paid them rent ..so i told the manager that on the days this woman worked the smell was dreadfull..and the manager said she knew but it was hard to tell her..so i said i will tell her if you dont as i am not scared to say anything..so she knew how blunt i could be so she had to have a quiet word with her..and the odour got less but it still didnt go to my satisfaction..so i moved to another shop to escape..i have been odour hunting all this week since my bus trip and tommorow i am taking my grandson on his first ever bus journey..will be taking a hanky to put over my nose just in case...
