Can anyone tell me what the origin of "being treated like a pie can" is please?

From the context this phrase is implied, I think it is used when someone is being taken advantage of.

It dates back to the early 18th century when mothers would go to the grocer to the shopping and when they asked for a pie contained in a can, the shop keeper would give them a puzzled look as it was frowned upon for women to eat meat from a can so they would treat like crap from the sole of your shoe. So the phrase actually means being treated like ****.
