I hear it's possible to get some money back on unused tax. I'm trading my car in and don't want the delear to get a penny more out of me than he already is/has. There are about 8 months left to run on my disc.

How do I go about doing this?

Pick up a form from your Post Office, fill it in and send it back with the disc to Swansea.
You can get 1/12 of the annual duty for each full month.

As already stated you get a form from your post office, and you can claim for each FULL month left.. As today is June 1st, then you cannot claim for June.

Legaly you have to display a current tax disc in the windscreen of your car when you drive it or park it on a public road, so drive it there and park it with the rear of the car showing to the car salesman hehehe, then snatch out the tax disc when you leave the car (on private premises.. the garage).

If it's easier for you, you can get the form off their website aswell as at the Post Office. Just did mine and it came back really quickly.
I believe you get a full refund for every complete month. You should have returned the vehicle excise disc before June 1st.
