Hi everyone.
we are going to Portugal next week for holiday. we havnt been abroad for ages and dont have much spending money.
was just wondering where was best to buy basic groceries, like spagetti, weetabix, nappies,.. should we buy them here and pack them in suitcase, or would it be cheaper there. we are going to a place thats inland.. if that makes any odds!!
cheers

I've been to Portugal a lot, and hardly take anything.

Prices at local shops and supermarkets are really good, and it's simply not worth carrying that sort of stuff.

I never pack consumables or disposables when I go to Portugal. On the day you arrive, go to the local supermarket, and stock up. You'll also pay a lot less for shampoo, sun cream, shower gel, deodorants, toothpaste etc.

It's years since I've been there but I remember that the supermarkets were very good as jayne says, and cheaper. We took a few things with us the first time we went but found that we could get everything cheaper over there so didn't bother the next time round. Enjoy your holiday - it's a beautiful country
Ya, it's lovely ... and the Portuguese people are just so nice.

tee hee.. thanks mrs overall.. will be extra carfull to make sure we have no little accidents like that!!!
The Portuguese are a bitt too laid back when it comes to road sense so bear that in mind if you're driving. Don't know Bordeira, furthest along I went was to Silves.
Hello there,
Sao bras De Alportel is only about 22Kms from Faro(approx 18 miles).and Faro is a lovely place to visit.
Here are some links to the nearest big town(and area) to Bordeira:~

http://www.algarve-portal.com/en/cities/sao_br as/

and here are two Supermarkets near Sao Bras:~
ECOMARCH
Rua Antnio Rosa Brito n 13/17
So Brs de Alportel

INTERMARCH
Campina, Estrada de Tavira
So Brs de Alportel

I am sorry I can't find a map of them for you,but it was difficult enough findind their addresses! The company that runs them doesn't have a store locator(like Sainsbury's or Tesbo).

Cheers mr veritas that was all really helpfull. its made me really excited!!
5 more sleeps!!
There are a lot of chains of supermarkets in Portugal, along the same lines as Lidl, (can't rememeber the name but they are green)they are very cheap for basics and check out the frozen section as they have prawns etc...very very cheap, avoid the little local shops as they are more expensive. It is worth taking nappies as they are expensive anywhere.
Have a great time
