My hubby bought me a lovely moth orchid a few days ago that had lots of buds on it.

I have treated it exactly the same as orchids I have had before but when I looked at it this morning over half of the buds had gone brown and soft.

I have removed all of the brown buds but does anyone know what coould have caused this?

Is it in a clear container? Orchids need daylight at their roots. They should always be kept in a see through pot.
I have read about the clear pots for Orchids but lets face it whenever you get one as a gift (as I did) they are never in clear pots,. I was told to water mine with half a cup of water once a week (which I did) and to cut the flowers off as soon as they die( which I did) I now have an Orchid a year later still in a black metal pot with all new shoots growing out of it..
It has most probably dried out in the store before you bought it or it has suffered from cold damage at some point.

They do like light at the roots as this is what they would get in their natural habitat but it is not essential and would not cause buds to turn brown.
