My modem will not detect a dial tone. When I connect it to the phone line the line crackles. I have tried new cables, disconnecting the phones and connecting the PC directly to the phone socket. Nothing works. Could this be a faulty modem? (I have a second PC that works fine) Hope someone can help.

I come across a modem in the past that was faulty and introduced noise onto the line, hence making itself almost useless. It's also possible that the cable for it has a bad connection somewhere: try a different one if you have one to hand. Finally, and if all else fails, tell the modem to dial irrespective of a dial-tone and see how it performs - if it does so satisfactorily then hey presto...
I had no dialtone error too. So I unplugged from the socket for a minute and all was ok again. I guess though that you have this All the time? Not to goof about, but you could try deleting your modem and re-installing it (own risk) but that's worked for me before too.
