I am planning a trip soon which is from North Liverpool to Ben Nevis area in Scotland.  The AA Route Planner says the journey will be 297 miles and will take 5hrs.

I have will be using a 1.8 litre (petrol) newish ('03 reg) Mondeo.  I would imagine it costs about 45 -50 to fill the tank, but, does anyone know how many tanks I am likely to use -  there and back?

The car will have 5 adults in it and probably a boot full of medium weight stuff.

Any ideas or suggestions on how much I will use will be appreciated.  The cost of petrol is to be divided by all ppl in the car you see.

Thanks

I would ESTIMATE about two tanks would be enough, with a bit spare.

Thanks, somebody else has said they estimate 110 will be more than enough.

I think you should charge more!

They are being driven around in someone elses car, wear and tear on your vehicle and you with all the driving to do.  I think its a little harsh they are purely paying the petrol, you shouldnt have to work it out.  I would ring a private hire company and ask how much they would charge and present that to your passengers.

You will be lucky to get there in 5 hours.  I've done it twice (albeit from Stoke, a bit further south).  The bit up the M6 to Glasgow is fine, provided there are no roadworks on the motorway etc.

The bit from Glasgow to Fort William took just as long even though it was half as far.  Single track windy roads round lochs and mountains.  Lovely scenery but a nightmare should there be an accident - no one can get past.  Last time we went there were 2 accidents and the journey took 9 hours in total (with 2 rest stops of about 1/2 hour each).

Best time from Stoke to Glen Coe coast is 7 hours.  From the 'puddle approx 6 hours.  You'll use 10-12 gals (is that a tankful?) anything extra you charge is up to you.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, been very helpful.
20 a head should easily cover the fuel cost but I would suggest filling your tank to the brim before heading into the highlands.  Fuel can cost 1 per litre or even more in some areas.
your car will give you 350miles to the tank asumeing you will be cruiesing the car at a modest speed the round trip will most likely take a tank and a half

I've been and done the trip, in case anyone is interested... it ended up being roughly 2 tanks.

Highland petrol is about 88p/litre.   In Scotland, on the 'A' roads petrol was about 86p/litre, but, if you go half a mile off the main road, the same company (Shell) offered it for 80p/litre - so just drive into a local town.

I think petrol tanks in Focus's are bigger than Mondeo one's too?!!?

Sammy Snake & Tim Baxter were right, it took around 7hrs, rather than 5.

P.s. Dumbarton is dodgy.
