Soda Crystals v Sodium Bicarb v bicarbonate of soda

Hi all,

In my efforts to become greener and save some pennies hopefully, I have ventured in to the world of home made cleaning products.

I am completely unstuck about the following though, soda crystals, sodium bicarb and bicarbonate of soda.

Are they all one and the same thing? Having gone out to buy bicarbonate of soda, I was sold soda crystals, but they seem a little more hard core than I was expecting.

Anyone who could clarify this for me?

Soda crystal is the usual name for washing soda(Sodium Carbonate). This is a fairly aggressive cleaner.
The other two are the same and it is also called baking soda.

ah, so its the "bi" bit that makes a difference then? From my distant recall of chemistry that's two oxygenated carbons rather than just the one..........

They have started to sell Soda Crystals in a powder form now in the supermarkets - I usually tip some in with my washing powder - it not only cleans the washing machine but is a good stain remover for clothes. In fact I think soda crystals are the basic ingredient in all these stain products.

Its also good for putting down the sink plughole.
