Does anyone know through which bank my boyfriend can open a basic bank account online and get the details (ie account number) emailed through asap. It is just for JSA to get paid into and rent to landlord taken out.

Have a look at the post office. They do a very good range of basic accounts

The Post Office don't actually do ANY basic bank accounts of the type requested.

The Post Office card account (JSA in OK, but only cash out) has a cumbersome application procedure starting with the benefits agency sending you a letter inviting you to apply for one. You then get the form at the PO, fill it in, return it through the PO and eventually pick your card up at te PO. You then several weeks later tell the benefits agency your account details......

The others are not PO accounts at all - just a list of the banks whose basic bank account cards they accept for cash withdrawals. You'd need to look at the web site for each to see if online applications are possible
Try Nationwide, my JSA gets paid in okay but i did my application manually rather than online, the Post Office said no and sent me to Nationwide!

Try the Co-op bank, when I first wanted to open a bank account I got in touch with them by phone and had an internet account within 3 days, they are really helpful, you speak to a British person who you can understand ( not one of these call centers abroad! ) I wouldn't swop the Co-op for any other bank.
