I wouldn't have thought it would matter, as long as the wood is tied securely. What are you trying to do with the wood once tied?

I remember working in a sawmill 40 years ago and we used a special non slip knot to tie the wood together before it was shipped out. What I am trying to do is pull together a small greenhouse frame which keeps pulling apart when plant pots etc are moved and the knot we used in the sawmill would be ideal for this job.
Sounds like you could use a round turn with two half hitches. Why don't you take a look at it here:

However, as you'll see, this very helpful link might give you other ideas, such as a bowline or a constrictor...
