My mother bought some brown sugar from the supermarket and once open was shown to be solid. Nothing that she does seems to make it break up and become like regular sugar which you can pour into a cup.

Any cooking/bakery experts out there who can help?

Thanks.

Sure... if you don't need it for say, 24 hours, put it in an airtight plastic bag with either a slice of fresh bread or a slightly damp paper towel and place it on the counter... it'll be good to go tomorrow

Need, it right now? Put it in a plastic, microwave-friendly bowl, put a small container of water next to it and pop in mike-oven for about 20 to 30 seconds. (might need another 30 seconds... check it). Alternately, place the proverbial damp paper towel in the bag with the sugar and microwave for 30 seconds at a time... it'll be serviceable in a minute or so...

I would put it in a large plastic bag and then give it a good long bashing with a rolling pin.
