sorry surreyman, this is not an answer, but i'm so glad someone else has asked this - it's been driving me mad! I think it's one of those tunes that you remember from way way back but don't know why. I keep thinking of adverts for holidays, you know, from the fred pontin "book early!" days. am i wrong?

You may be right crisgal . I may be being unduly influenced by the title but i cannot get the image of animals and probably Africa out of my head when i think of it.
i suppose if you were trying to flog a holiday on safari, that would be the tune you'd pick!
Well, in the US, the original theme song for the game show "The Match Game" used "A Swingin' Safari."  Don't know if that show was ever broadcast on the other side of the pond, though.
