After reading this story my mind turned to the poor, little innocent, Jamie Bulger, and how he was attacked by two young boys. Fortunately, the boys attacked in this incident are still alive, but my question is, are the vicious children who carried out the attack a product of a terrible upbringing or are they inherently evil? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/south_yorks hire/7987024.stm

This happened about 5 miles from my home Julnar and the boys responsible live only 3 miles away. I have a ten year old myself .
this horrific attack fetches it home to you that you can not be to careful when it comes to your kids welfare. it's about time the authorities started to get tough with knife crime.

terrible upbringing certainly but even so most kids even with a bad upbringing don't go around doing this sort of thing.

As you so rightly say, no-knowledge, even children with terrible upbringings very rarely behave in such a vicious manner. I do wonder what it is that tips some children over the edge.
I think (and this is no way an excuse) that there are a variety of circumstances that, although individually would have little effect, somehow react when they come together and crystalise into the sort of barbaric behaviour we have seen.
Its heartbreaking what happened to these two innocent boys - it said on the news last night they had two suspects in custody a 9 and 10 year old and apparently they had recently been placed into foster care.

I think some kids (and adults) are just plain evil,
nothing to do with upbringing, good or bad.
They were in foster care but still going to see their father as he lived near by. What sickens me is the crime of ABH in this case sounds pathetic.
I think I saw on the early morning news or GMTV that one of the tabloids claimed the mother said "it's nowt to do with me". If true then it says a lot about the kids' upbringing. I still think even with a bad upbringing most children have a good understanding or what is right and wrong.

As for tipping it over the edge - how often do these sorts of incidents happen with just one child being the perpetrator? There always seems to be more than one, as if egging each other on to push past the line - perhaps that's what it takes to take it from a silly game to something more sinister. Does make you wonder, even if a child is usually a model child, falling in with the wrong crowd and feeling pressurised to participate in something bad - would they?
Given that both are meant to be "in care", we'll no doubt get the usual responses from those responsible for their supervision, or lack of it:

"We sincerely regret what has happened blah blah blah"

"We must learn lessons from this to ensure that it never happens again blah blah blah"

Smack of deja vu? Again and again and again and again and again......(Is this becoming boringly repetitive and unoriginal?)

I have to agree paraffin. We will no doubt see a lot of hand wringing. I would have hoped that someone in the care profession would have recognised the 'signs' in one or both of these boys and begun some form of welfare that would have defused these boys before this tragic event occurred.

are the vicious children who carried out the attack a product of a terrible upbringing or are they inherently evil?

Well a bit of both,as kids some of us have a curious, evil streak, pulling legs of insects, annoying neighbors, making dogs bark etc.... If we are told by adults that these things are wrong then we are likely to learn that these practices are wrong,if we are told they are wrong but then our boozed up dad comes in and starts taking drugs with our mum and then starts beating her then tells us f^^ck the neigbors and then goes and gets into a fight and goes prison, then It is almost 100% garaunteed that we will grow up psychologically damaged one way or another!
i would say its the parents at fault,
i worked in a hospital for many years and seeing new born babies leaving the hospital with what could only be describe as skunk smoking scum parents use to make my heart ache.what bloody chance do kids have with that type of parent, the area the two kids are from is knowns a no,go area more or less.now i hear they been charged with attempted murder, good that'll keep away for a few years
I see this sort of casual callousness daily, I don't know the answer other than to lock up the offenders.
What's shocking about this is that they totrured them, it does'nt seem to happen elsewhere with the same sort of monotonous regularity.
