I shall soon need new ink cartridges in my printer, so the computer screen flashes up, and indeed the copies are a bit fainter.  I have had all my equipment from new recently so I should like to take the printer back to PC and be shown how to change the cartridges this first time.  (I'm going there to buy the cartridges anyway.) Is it OK to just take the two plugs out from the back without switching everything else off. please?  I don't want to upset my installation, which was done by an engineer. I have BT Broadband installed on an HP Media Centre.

Do you not have the manual to give step-by-step instructions for changing the ink cartridges?

Here's a link to the web version http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=374584&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

If you still prefer to lug the printer to a shop, you can indeed remove it with the PC still running but ensure the printer is powered off before removing the USB cable and power cord.

Thanks for your trouble, Kempie.  I probably could do it but you have no idea how my eyes glaze over at the thought of following manuals.  I don't think the printer is too bad too take to my nearest PC world.  I'll be brave and have a look at the manual first, though.

Thanks for the disconnection info.

Plugs you can remove without switcg off - USB, Paralell, sound card, video card, modem

Plugs you shouldn't remove (but never seems to do any harm!) - Serial

Plugs you CANNOT take out or put without switching off - PS2 Mouse + Keyboard

kempie - the manual on screen was much more attractive than the manual (the same), which I do have. I have taken out the cartridges and I think I'll use them a bit longer without replacing.  That's a relief!   Incidentally in reading it on screen I see why I cannot scan a document (I've had all the stuff for three months but haven't used the scan facility yet.)  The 'next to the time' icon is not on the icon tray.  Just got to figure out how I get it there now.

redmug: Thanks.  The installation was done by a computer engineer I found the name of in the yellow pages.  It was a 'wham bam it's done ma'm' encounter, and I don't know what the hell's-goin' on down there.  I gingerly dust amongst the forest of wires and cables; I  know enough not do unplug the BT modem and the PC main drive without switching off but that's all!  I have a wireless mouse and keyboard. But I shall post another question about the mouse.
