"buying" credit card debts

I got into trouble with a credit card debt, got it sorted (I thought), had interest knocked off and have been repaying in installments for 6 months to a third party as agreed with original lender. Just been contacted by another company who say they have bought the debt so I now owe them the original amount and pay NOW. I sent them a copy of a letter from the people I am paying to confirming that I am paying and nothing has changed, but all I had back was a threat of them taking me to court. Obviously I want to keep up the agreement I already have , paying the smaller sum as negotiated with the original lender, not starting again with someone else (and what happens to the money I have already paid?)
Can anyone help?has had a similar problem?

It's common practice. Have you tried contacting the original company? Sounds like you may have an argument that your contract was with them, as was your revised one. But there may be small print allowing them to sell on your debt. Contact citizen's advice.
I would definately go back to the original credit card company. Surely they can only "sell on" the balance of the debt not the original debt. I would do what Whickerman says and seek advise at the CAB. Don't leave it, it won't go away.
i had exactly the same problem i went to see a money and dept advisor who sorted everything out for me and i ended up 1.00 per month companys by law cannot do this to you especially if you are paying by an agreement they have to imform you dept collection agents prey on vunerable people
This sounds like HFO services, they obtain your details falsely sometimes and even harrass you by telephone when they get your number, they also contact you by Turnbull and Rotherford solicitors, they cannot be reasoned with at all.
