youre not silly - i cant do it either!!
The reason you are recording a blank screen is because your DVD Recorder is not tuned to your freeview Channels.
Have you connected incoming Aerial lead firstly to DVD then to TV, and linked both by means of 21 pin Scart lead.
Using TV Screen as your guide, go into DVD Set-up Menu and select Auto-tune, and tune in all available Freeview Channels.
My Panasonic automatically tunes in the Channels in the same order as they appear on my TV.
Don't know what Make/Model your DVD is, but you should be able to tune it OK by following tuning instructions in your Handbook.
I don't think you can do it unless the DVD recorder has a built in Digi-box. With mine I've had to fit an external digi-box with a scart lead going from the digi-box to the red/yellow/white inputs on the DVD recorder.

You are all making the classic mistake. Your means of recording has to have the freeview tuner, not the TV - that is for VIEWING only.

It should be possible to record from the TV tuner, but, and tjis is the important thing, The TV MUST be on and tuned to the channel you want - which sort of makes recording it pointless I guess.
Forget recording from the tv's tuner -unless you want to leave the set on for the duration.

if your dvd recorder does not have a built in DVB-T (freeview) tuner, then you will need to buy a set top box and connect that to the AV input of the dvd recorder to be able to record freeview cahnnels and independently of the tv. You will also then be able to record one thing and watch another on the tv, even if both are freeview channels..
