Dell fails to boot

I have a Dell Dimension 5200 and I am having intermittent problems starting the machine. The fan starts running very fast and the diagnostic display on the front runs through the A,B,C & D and stops on D. At this stage it fails to boot. I presume this is some type of hardware failure. I can get it to boot on occasions and the computer rune perfectly. I have tried disabling various peripherals but it makes no difference. Any ideas on what might be wrong?
Cheers Dave.

If 3 and 4 were illuminated it would indicate RAM.
Still worth a try by removing and refitting the memory modules.

Thanks for the reply sarah_louise, I have tried taking out the RAM modules and the graphics card and re-seating them, but it is still the same. I think it must be the motherboard. Cheers.
