I would say supermarkets as they can afford to buy in bulk.
it doesn't mean you are getting the bst though.
greengrocers have a reputation to upkeep, so you will probably get the best stuff from them.
depends if you think it is worth paying that bit extra for your fruit and veg.
Greengrocer every time for me, hate plastic wrapped veg and salad stuff. Also like to help a small business survive .

But understand why supermarkets are popular, just not for me.
My piece of string is 34.5cm long.
A greengrocer can be cheaper. Especially in a local market. My wife used to own a florist shop and even my friends would say 'you cannot compete with Tesco - they are so cheap' - but in fact we were always cheaper, fresher and best quality blooms.
Public conceptions are difficult to change.
Greengrocers for me. I love going in getting what I need then being told it's less than a fiver.
I also notice my local corner shop often has beer cheaper than the big supermarkets.
I'd prefer buying from a local greengrocer etc as you usually get better service but to be honest I usually use the supermarket. It's just so much more convenient to buy all your goods in one place.

To correct one of the previous answers, you can of course buy fruit and vegetables (also meat, fish etc) loose and not prepacked in plastic in the supermarkets.

I've bought at market stalls before but find you do have to be very careful. Several times now I've got home to find mouldy fruit that the stall holder has added from behind the stall.

Generally I'd say a supermarket can be the cheapest option but, as has been said, cheap is not always best (see my market stall comment as an example).
