i would like to listen to something that is not baroque or fancy but simple bowing on a double bass or cello, where you can hear the notes broken down to each hair being driven across the string.... dark and moodyish..... any suggestions anyone?

this is the saddest love story. Look up the musicians on google or Jacquline du pre's life story.

Dark and Moody cello I would suggest Max Bruch's Kol Nedri. There are several good recordings of it.

For double bass, look for some recrds by the American player Gary Karr - he has done some pretty good stuff. Other double bass work by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf is a bit baroque ( he was writing about the same time as Moz\art) Try looking at the Presto classical web site they have quite a bit of the bass repertoire.
