Is it CITES? Doesn't really have the meaning of compain, does it? I'm sure it must be an obvious answer and I'll have a sore leg (from kicking myself!) later.

Thanks for all your answers. Yes, carps it is. For some unknown reason I had traipsed for 26d instead of trampled, and toss for 48a instead of roll.
