Can moons have their own moons, or is there something in the laws of motion or gravity that prevent this?

No it's possible, but the bodies will tend to find a point of lowest energy use.

This may result in the moon of the moon becoming another moon of the planet in question. However, it may not; it's a complex system (3+ bodies) and has many solutions.
