can anyone tell me which side of a garden (rear) i would be responsable for, i understand i am only responsable for one side, if i stood with my back to my house would it be the left or right hand side

You need to check your deeds or land certificate. The boundary(s) you are responsible for will be marked with a 'T'
And quite often the boundaries are a shared responsibility. You need to look at your deeds, as others have suggested. If your property is registered then you can get a copy of your deeds from the Land Registry (if they are not in your possession of course).

it is generally the left side
Carrac may be correct - but I know mine is the right hand side!!
No - sorry - with my back to the front of the house it is the left side. I got confused because the only fencing is in the rear and with my back to the rear of the house it is the right. Age is numbing my brain!!
plus it's not always the case that there is only 1 to maintain - i live in a row of 6 houses, so with end fences there are 8 fences in total

It will be on your deeds. All the fences on my property are mine.
Ours are joint boundaries. Older properties often don't fall into line with rules and regulations at all. Our boundaries have also changed over the last 200+ years.
