deggers, "Fred....get real" ? Moi?
" National treasure" is not an expression used for the likes of Dame Judi who have done great works. It's reserved for the likes of Stephen Fry, who has been 'fast becoming a national treasure' for so long he must have arrived by now !
Be fair, Jade Goody stands for a certain type of Briton, unique to us, famous (or infamous, take your pick) who is unique and distinctive of our nation ( 'distinctive' not distguished', ! Fry is another distinctive type in that category!
saxy-jag.. you don't have to say nice things, but posting trivial comments about a dying woman infuriates me.

and yes, evidently she does sell newspapers.

I guess you're all the people who don't bother giving blood because, why would you help someone you didn't know and might not really like? no humanity...
there is no one worse (some as bad though) than myself when it comes to taking the p*ss but some subject matter should be left alone. ok jade is not very bright, she can come across as crass, did she deserve to earn millions?
no i don't think so personally ,
but some of you appear to be getting some bizarre feeling of glee that a young woman of 27 with young children is dying of cancer
un fo0king believable!
The public and media responses to Jade Goody say much about both.

Initially she was castigated remorselessly by the tabloids for her lack of education and somewhat plain features, aided and abetted by the public who dictate the features policy of said papers.

Then she became a 'dumb girl done good' for being a celebrity.

Another volte face when she made some racist observations on BB which turned the nation into a frothing mass of 'liberals'.

Now, she is a 'treasure' and 'brave' as she lives out her last few days in the media spotlight.

What has changed here? Only the public and media view of Jade Goody, who, to her credit, has remained utterly consistant throughout.

Jade will end her life as she started it - a poorly educated young woman who has taken the barbed wire treadmill of celebrity and learned to run on it successfully by being shrewd enough to employ Max Clifford to assist. She has managed to make an income which others with her start in life could only dream of - and it is a tragedy that any mother dies at her age in this way.

The media and public will continue to spout its vitriol and sticky sympathy in equal measure, and Jade will do as she has always done - ignore the nonsense, take the money, and do her best for her children.

Jade Goody is a fundamentally decent young woman with some ill-informed opinions and attitudes who has exposed this celebrity culture and its media for the shallow two-faced moralising idiots that they are.

Jade doesn't care either way, right now, she is busy preparing to leave her loved ones behind.
Very well said, andy.

I'm a leftie and I abhor racism. Her comments in the second Big Brother episode were very disappointing. But I think she's generally alright. As usual, those who do bash her do so in a thinly veiled show of chav-bashing - the practice whereby people who are worried about appearing crass or stupid or uncultured try to distance themselves from those traits in the most obvious way imaginable, putting down one section of society in an attempt to elevate themselves.

The criticism Jade received when she was first in Big Brother was obscene. The Mirror ran a campaign called 'Kill The Pig', a daily scathing reference to her supposedly porcine features. It was aggressively over the top. But she seemed to shrug this off in quite a cheery way. You know, respect.

I dunno about a national treasure, but she's alright in my book.
vhg, granted lots of people are dying, but lets face it, if they could get together as much money as she has for the children they leave behind they would, and who can blame her, how many people do you know who would rather leave nothing for thier loved ones or a several millions, i for one would want to leave as much as i could for them.
