i have a sky plus box that records, ive just been given it as my freinds upgraded to hd

i dont subscribe to sky at all but used my old sky box to watch free to air channels, i was under the ipmression that i would be able to record on the sky plus box, but it wont let me,
i need to know

can u record if u only watch the free to veiw channels, or do you have to subscribe

you have to have extra cabling to use sky + and subscribe to it, although it doesnt cost anything

what kind of extra cabling,
You need a quad LNB (the bit on the end of the pole on the dish) and a second cable run from that to the box.
