Manifest parse error

I'm trying to load windows xp pro (upgrade from 98se ) , the installation will not proceed after I get this message ' Manifest Parse Error : Invalid at the top level of the document ' any one know what this means

Have you tried converting the partition to NTFS?

Thanks Steve , I typed the exact phrase into Google and was directed to a site / Forum called Richards Ramblings , I learned that the CONTROLS.MAN file on the installation disk was corrupted , yer man had posted on his site code to replace the corrupted file , I copied it and saved it to notebook , I then copied the entire contents of the XP installation disk to my HD I followed the path mentioned in the Parse error notice I386\ams\6000\msft\windows\common\controls.man I deleted CONTROLS.MAN then pasted in the new notebook file containing the code I copied from Richards site , I then burned myself a new installation cd from my HD copy , It worked a treat the new cd made a faultless install . Thanks again for taking the time to reply Steve .
