The boundary of the city of Dublin ( Ireland ) in the Middle Ages was known as" the pale". Therefore if you lived beyond the pale you were an outsider.
The Dublin boundary was called the Pale, as in Pallisade...
I think 'pale' is an old word for fence (still uses as 'paling') so 'beyond the pale' means banished to outside the town/city.
