Resolved to mend 6 differently (10) determined?

Is my answer right. I took 6 letters from differently DETERmIned and mixed them with mend, but this solution seems too confusing to be true.

is the answer to 6 across or 6 down tiered by any chance, it's an anagram of mend and the answer to 6a/6d
Does it refer to the clue at 6?
... or dieter?
Question Author
the clue at 6 is Prevent one being eaten - being this? (6)
If the answer to 6 is 'Tiered', then that + 'Mend' is an anagram of 'Determined' (?)
dieter + mend (anag) = determined
D i eter
Question Author
so then is the answer for 6 tiered?
Oh, ok!

6 D-i-eter (works with 'Mend' as above...)
Question Author
so can someone explain to me how the answer was gotten to. what indicates to take the word dieter
prevent (deter) one (i) being eaten = dieter
Question Author
dieter doesnt mean to be eaten right? it means to regulate what you eat. wouldnt the answer to 6 be tiered...althought i dont see where the definiton would be
Prevent one being eaten - being this?

The definition is "being this?" "this" being a dieter. The "?" often indicates that the setter is taking a few liberties with cryptic conventions for the sake of a clever surface reading.

so "mend 6" now becomes "mend dieter", "differently" (anagram) yields determined
the word deter swallows the "i" (ie includes it)
