yes but it does depend upon the material that the worktop is made from however I would not recommend it as over time the paint may being to flake especially if hot items are placed on it.

if there is anything particularly wrong with the worktop shouldn't the landlord replace it especially if it it contravening some health and safety law.?

Thanks tiger. No, there isnt anything wrong - except the colour ! LOL ! I am a bit picky !!
I suppose it depends upon how long you intend on staying there. if for at least another two years it might well be worth the extra money and getting a new worktop fitted. most are chipboard/mdf based with a laminate covering so you have a range of choice (you might even be able to get the landlord to cough up for some/all of the expense). if you are not planning on staying there then paint the worktop but make sure you use chopping boards and trivets when preparing food.

Thankyou for your time - I will have a look in B&Q.
If you are renting you should check with your landlord first! If they are wood, a latex gloss would be good, two coats at least. If it is a laminate or formica top, you might check into something else. There are enamel paints that you could use, even some for ceramic tiles, now! But it's smelly stuff, and you need alot of ventillation! Maybe you could try your hand at applying an adhesive vinyl like Contact brand...comes in an array of colors and designs....I did this on an old counter top years ago, and it worked out pretty well. Eventually the finish starts to wear, but it will work for at least a couple of years! Just dont put hot pans on it!!! It will peel back off if you dont like it, or you could put on a new design over it later on!!!
Worktops can be painted, but using a specialist resin that would probably have to be applied by a specialist company, and it would likely cost you more than you'd want to spend. Check out this.
