Tricky one: it just gets thinner and thinner as you go higher. About 100km is a sensible figure.

I have heard the following metaphor: imagine an orage tightly wrapped in a sheet of paper. If the Earrth were the size of an orange then the atmosphere would be the thickness of th epaper.

I can't be bothered to do the arithmetic to check this, but I like the point it's making.
The internationally defined boundary for space is set at 100km, but as already said, it just gets thinner and thinner the further 'up' you go.
Toss a coin in the air, stand back and shout 'Catch'. I'll wager it falls to the ground. You see it can't even understand simple instructions.
