I have a 10 month old Norwegian Forest cat - the vet has checked him out and he is fine BUT he is constantly getting runny poo - cant spell diaohrhea - we have tried various (expensive) hypoallergenic brands of both wet and dry food and supermarket stuff as well but to no avail. Plain chicken sorts him out but I dont think that gives him all the nutrients he needs (fish makes him worse) - any suggestions ? He is a lovely big kitten but gets the blues when his tum is upset and sometimes doesnt go in his tray - he always uses his tray when his tum is ok.

I don't have extensive experience with this particular breed- however I did google in Norwegian Forest Cat - feeding and came up with a lot of web sites - had a quick flick through and there seemed to be lots of advice- found some info on the human equiviant of irritable bowel syndrome in cats. hope this helps and that you find a solution - keep us posted - if just plain chicken suits him iI would suggest that the additives in commercial food don't, or that its too rich for his system. individual animals within a breed often need completely different food.anyway.A personal choice with me(based on years of animal welfare work in UK and Africa) is that I would rather my animal didn't lose essential goodies by having constant diarrhoea than feed what didn't suit even though it was an all singing all dancing feed. would feed something acceptable to his digestive system for quite a while in order to let this calm calm down and then introduce extras very, very carefully. Be interested in the outcome - good luck
we had this problem years ago with 1 of ours an old vet told me mix some wholemeal bread in with his meat as all this" modern " food doesnt have enough fibre in it worked for ours and have always done this ever since mash the bread with a bit of warm water first then mix the meat in i do 1 round of bread for each cat but you would probably need to give him just a little to get him used to it to start with as he might not be very pleased having to eat bread with his meat ours were not amused to start with but are fine now
Just a thought -
What does he drink?
Our cats get diahoerea if they drink any milk, so it is water all the time for them.
Hope your kitten is better soon.
I was just going to suggest what littleowl did - cut out milk/cream and give water instead, may solve your cat's problems. Definitely affects my two in that way.

Thank you all - I dont give either of them dairy products - but I will try the brown bread idea gradually as it makes sense. Will also get googling - I did google NFC but will try again putting diet or food into the search as well. Thanks again for your kind interest - I will willingly let you know how/if he improves but I am not sure how to do this - I will just leave another post on this site. unless there is another way ? :-) Annie
www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/norwegian.html - try this site - at the top of the homepage there's a menu -click on cat care - hope it helps
