what is Bipolar ?

Excuse my ignorance, but could someone explain what this is? I hear Kerry Katona has it and there have been a couple of snipets in the papers about it, but no-one really explains what it is? just curious, thanks

Bipolar disorder was formerly referred to as 'manic depression'.
