Springer has had first pup (1). Could it be getting too much milk as it is on its own? What to do?

Need a bit more info. When was it born, i.e. has the mother finished whelping and is there definitely no more puppies to come out?

If this is an only pup it will still only drink as much as it wants, and the bitches milk will gradually dry up. If the pup is not regularly feeding from each teat some may get blocked and she may get mastitis, so if any of her teats feel hot or look inflamed get her to a vet. Also give her a small amount of calcium now she is feeding or else she may get eclampsia.

Thanks for your answer. Pup born on Saturday. Mother very young 1 year 9 Mths. She had pup outside and didnt stay with it. We just found it when we heard it crying. Looked all around but didn't find any others. (Father is 11 years old so that may be why only one). Was very cold. Must have been alone at least an hour. We brought them in and got it thawed out at the stove and got mother to take up with it. They are both out in shed and bonding well. Mother lively and in good form. Eating and drinking. Will check her teats tomorrow.
Thats one very lucky pup. Age is not a factor, my 11 year old has just fathered a litter of 6 in a breed that usually only has 3 or 4 and he has not mated a bitch for 7 years.
Glad pup seems ok.
