Taken off the back of the tax disc renewal/reminder slip:

'By law, you as the registered keeper will not be committing an offence if you tax the vehicle within 14 days of the date your current road tax runs out.

You MUST keep the vehicle off the road during this time as you WILL be committing an offence if it is used, or parked on the road.'
could you not have bought it yesterday or today? could you not have bought it online?
I do mine over the phone now - the details are on the reminder notice.
You would be best keeping the car off the road until you buy the disc! You would be ticketed and even clamped if you park somewhere and your lack of a valid tax disc is seen by a traffic warden. The note in the window would do you no good what so ever!
The renewal form also says:

'If you apply online or over the phone in the last few days of the month, you will NOT be committing an offence if you do not display a tax disc for the first 5 working days of the next month.

This is a new law that allows time for your tax disc to arrive in the post - only applicable if you made your application BEFORE the current one runs out.'

Too late for you now...
Why is it too late to renew online?
My mistake... joko could buy it online this afternoon...
Today is the last day of the month, so joko is not too late to renew it online.
Yes, of course you can, still get fined though for having no tax though.
The fine will be for failing to display a valid tax disc - it doesnt matter whether you have one or not.
you can buy it from a post office on the last 2 days of the month using your log/registration book.
You can buy it sooner using the remainder - so why is it a problem?

its a probelm because the 1st is a sunday....

and i have not had the money until now...
If you do not show a valid Tax Disk according to the current Traffic Management Act 2008. You can be issued a penalty charge by the local government agency. If the tax disk is less than one calender month out of date most agencys will waive it.
If however you do not display a tax disk at all you will be issued a penalty charge by the DVLA., who will assertain when the tax ran out for that vehicle and if it was longer than 28 days a charge will be issued. This is based on a 70 fixed charge plus twice the outstanding months tax owing, including the first 28 days.(Any part of a calender month is charged as a month).
I got stopped once by the law and my tax disc was out by one day, so I used the usual 'I have 14 days to get a new one' so they then told me that I get the reminder 14 days before it's due and that's what the 14 days are and if you run your vehicle on a public road with an out of date tax disc then you'll get a fine, I didn't get a fine as I had the money and details on me at the time to get my new disc....
