This is a fairly common theme among science fiction writers, amongst the latest being Peter F Hamilton. In his books, people have their memories and personalities recorded in crystals. These are loaded into regenerated bodies to allow a form of immortality. Remember that science fiction writers often lead technology!
P.S. I'd recommend using Apple, rather than Microsoft!

Isn't the problem that you think of yourself as located just behind your eyes? If you make a copy of yourself on a computer it might think it is you, but I guess you will still think you are behind your own eyes.
