The genus Samia contains about 19 gorgeous species of moth. I was wondering how the genus name came about? Have tried to find out using the net, but to no avail so far...

Might have something to do with Greek mythology.

Samia was the daughter of the river-god Maeander. She married one of the Argonauts named Ancaes, a Lelegian king of Samos.

Samos was an island off the western coast of Asia Minor, between Ephesus and Miletus. The island was named after Samia herself.

Samia is also a generic Muslem name meaning lofty or noble - and looking at these stunning moths I would definitely agree.
