Volvo 850 wont start

My 1964 Volvo 850 lambda light came on a couple of weeks ago. I managed to limp home but since then the car wont start and the lambda light and engine problem lights are on. From what I have read, the lambda sensor fault should not stop the car from running. Any thought and ideas please?

A fault on the lambda sensor can cause the car to stop running, depending on the severity of the problem. It's actually an extremely common fault on all Volvos from the early to late 90's. The best bet is to take it to a reputable mechanic or Volvo specialist...i'd use a main dealer as a last resort, as it will more than likely cost you double.

It is stopping the car running because if you carried on driving it could soon ruin the cat and could do further damage to the engine, also it would be driving illegally as the emissions would be to high.

Thanks fellas. Will get it in to my reasonably tame mechanics and see what happens. Was expecting something more and therefore expensive. I have been warned that I might need to have front pipe replaced too, which includes the cat. ... Ah well !!
