It is possible, but a complete PITA and not very reliable.

The best thing to do is to get yourself a router, which will be much easier to set up and much more reliable. Many ISPs provide these free of charge, or prices start at around 15 (or look on eBay). If you have to buy one, make sure that you get one suitable for your type of broadband. Cable connections will need a different router to "phone line" (ADSL) broadband.
I agree with LeMarchand - one router, two ethernet cables, one for each pc.

If you buy a wireless router, you can use one or both pc wirelessly or wired, they usually have 4 ethernet ports. This gives you the option of using of the computers in a different room, but if they are both to be used in the same room wired is better.
This is the type of router supplied from Sky but you can also buy them in the shops. It has 4 sockets on the back to connect things (PC Xbox PS3) and it's wireless too.
Had one running a Wii wireless and 2 DS handhelds wireless and a PC wired no problems.
