Depends what you mean by 'animal' as a class. By species, it is far and away....

the beetle.

If you take ALLL the creatures in the planet just now, and line them up in a biiiig line, then every FIFTH one is a beetle. Imagine that! And that's now even counting ringo or john.

Are ther more beetles than there are homo sapiens? They are mammals and all one species! There must be many sub-species of beetle.  How does anyone precisely count anything, anyway, what with the life spans being so varied between the species?  We hear about the planet's population being so-and-so, but how can this be arrived at?  from flaming 15.04.05.
